2 + 2 = 2.5

I know better than talking politics with my family at gatherings, really I do. But when my uncle said that Sarah Palin seemed to be a smart one, I was already laughing before I realized he was serious. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

So the discussion was had. I mentioned that she had left her old city knee-deep in debt, and then things turned bizarre. My uncle had never heard this, and said that because I was biased against Palin, it obviously wasn’t true. I mentioned there were plenty of things he hadn’t experienced that were true, and he said that his opinion was as valid as mine. I then asked him what two plus two equals. He said four. I said I believed it was one, and since both of our opinions are valid, two plus two must equal 2.5. He said that was stupid. I agreed, grabbed a roll, and went to watch football in the other room.

Baseball Addendums

In addition to my regular July 4th trip, there were a few other baseball excursions this year, both local and international. As I am finally in a mental place to speak of such things again, this is their story.

"More After The Jump"

Please stop this, I beg you. That's all I desire this week, if there is some magic fulfillment machine of random cranky desires written about in a sort of PK Dick/Twilight Zone retributive manner. I don't even know what "more after the jump" means anymore, and I can't tell if you're just getting paid by the word (in which case you have a damn fine excuse).

I Miss Gotham

I miss imperfection, I miss Gotham Book Mart, I miss Cedar Tavern, I miss a dirty east side, I miss wanton, open dysfunction, I miss a blissful lack of media savvy, I miss people willing to unionize and get drunk at lunch. Like every one else, I don't miss CBGB's, but I miss the idea of CBGB's. After my half gripe about the west coast, I for some reason kept thinking about Gotham Book Mart, which closed last year. Why am I dwelling on an old bookstore that didn't care about much about making money? Iconic, sure. I miss a population eager to spend a day rummaging in a used book store. They may still exist, but now they're spread out, across the country, and rummage electronically. Not as good. Not visceral. No texture. No mold. No broken bindings and snooty book clerks (if who didn't have just the book you were looking for, introduced you to books you wondered why you hadn't been looking for them all along).

Studs Terkel, RIP

I listened to, and read, Studs for years, he lived a good long time, and did a great number of things, I'm sad that the voice he had is gone, the voice he represented seems gone, and those people he could speak for still do work now in a sort of invisible cloud around obsession with fame and wealth. "I took a vacation once - it involved a beach - and to tell you the truth, I had no idea what to do with myself. It was torture. Work is life. Without it, there is no life."
